Johnny Mercer, MP visits school

Johnny Mercer, MP for Plymouth Moor View, visited the Plymouth Studio School recently.

He met with Year 10 and 12 students to try out the school’s  state-of-the-art sports equipment, including the Neurotracker, which is used to train top athletes and the military in mental agility and focus.

As well as using the Neurotracker for sports students, the school is currently pioneering its use as a ‘smart-gym’ in the classroom.  This is designed to help students get more from their learning, develop essential skills for life, and improve mental health.

Johnny also took a tour of the school’s new £4.2 million building which is currently under construction on-site at the University of St Mark & St John.  It is due to open later this Autumn and will include a High Performance Sports Centre designed to help 14-19 year olds train in Sports Performance, Sports Development & Coaching and Sports Management alongside their GCSEs and A levels.

Principal of Plymouth Studio School, Matt Lennon, comments, “It’s fantastic to be able to show Johnny what we’re doing at the school and how we want to play a full role in helping Plymouth’s next generation of young people and athletes aim high, realise their full potential and gain essential skills for success in life – whatever career they choose in the future.”

“Johnny’s own background in the military and his focus on teamwork, dedication and perseverance, will prove inspiring to our students.”

Johnny Mercer, MP comments, “ I am always pleased to visit schools, meet teachers and students but I am especially excited to see the new equipment and to try out the Neurotracker. Physical exercise was such an important part of my army life that I am fascinated to see what the next generation have to help them achieve their fitness goals. This is another example of the incredible facilities we have in Plymouth”
