Kier Construction Western and Wales has formally handed over the keys of the newly completed, £4.2 million Plymouth Studio School building to Head of Sports Performance and Strategy, Jon Rhodes.

Based on-site at the University of St Mark & St John, the new two storey building  provides an exciting combination of individual teaching spaces,  a central atrium and meeting place, a High Performance Sports Zone equipped with state-of-the art sports monitoring and research equipment, a  Gym and changing facilities.

Plymouth Studio School opened its doors to its first 100 students in September 2015 based in temporary accommodation at the University of St Mark and St John.  As an Academy school for 14 – 19 year olds, it offers a unique curriculum for up to 300 students who want to combine academic focus with sporting performance or careers in sport.

The school has already attracted some of Plymouth’s top young athletes competing at GB team level,  including divers Matt Dixon and Cody Powell-Tuckett, Modern Pentathlete Kay Bryson, Taekwondo champions, Tate Budge and Rhys Roffey  and a number of  Leander club swimmers.

Designed as a ‘breathing building’ with a focus on glass, light and air quality, the building is designed to provide an ‘optimum learning environment’ for students both academically and for sports performance.   Students will also have access to the world-class sports facilities on site at the University of St Mark & St John which are ranked 4th best in the UK.

Plymouth Studio School is one of many EFA project for Kier in Devon. They recently completed the Atrium Studio School in Ashburton, The Grove School in Totnes , Plymouth School of Creative Arts and  Haytor View in Newton Abbot. Kier has several education schemes currently on site these include the £9m STEM centre building at City College Plymouth, and Callywith College in Bodmin.

Head of Sports Performance and Strategy for Plymouth Studio School, Jon Rhodes, “We’re extremely pleased with the new building as it provides a unique environment for our students to combine their academic studies with sporting performance in one building.  We’re looking forward to welcoming students back on the 7th November to enjoy the new facilities.”
