Plymouth Studio School, the specialist sports academy school based on-site at Marjon, has appointed Mr Mark Cahill as its new Principal.

Mark, who joins Plymouth Studio School from Ivybridge Community College, has over 19 years’ experience in education, including sports and leadership roles across  a number of the City’s schools.

A former student at Marjon, Mark also played for Plymouth Raiders basketball team for seven years, competing at national level and for the English Universities squad.

Plymouth Studio School opened its doors in 2015 and moved into its new £4.2 million building in November 2016.     The school, which has a total capacity of just 300 students, combines academic focus with a unique High Performance Sports Programme for talented young athletes and the opportunity to study for a career in sport.    It is open to 14 – 19 year olds.

The school has already attracted some of the City’s top young athletes including international diver, Matt Dixon and modern pentathlon, Kay Bryson, who represents GB in her age group.    Young Raiders players already attending the school include Will Ashurst and Owen Knoetze.

Matt Dixon recently won the Herald Young Sports Personality of the Year award alongside Head of KS4 at the school, Steve Mooney, who picked up the Sports Teacher of the Year Award.

Mark comments, “I’m extremely excited to be joining the school and looking forward to creating an exciting balance of teaching and learning alongside the school’s unique sports performance and sport careers programmes.

“Having played sport at national level, I know the importance of balancing academic studies with training and competition programmes, and how important it is to be in an environment where your needs as both an athlete and a student are understood.

“With its world-class sports facilities on-site, Olympic and Commonwealth level coaches and the opportunity for young athletes to study alongside their training, the school provides the perfect mix when it comes to discovering and developing the City’s next generation of Olympic athletes and sports professionals.”
