New Sports Performance Programme Underway

Our Sports Performance Programme, which combines expert coaching with the latest in screening, monitoring and psychological testing to help students fulfil their full sporting potential and personal goals, is now officially underway.

The Programme runs alongside our GCSE/A level, Core PE and BTEC Sport qualification programmes and initial testing and screening using our state-of-the-art equipment is open to students of all abilities in all sports .  The aim is to give everyone the opportunity to develop their existing sporting talents and develop a weekly individual training programme integrated with their academic timetable.

In addition to a core training programme, students can also work with our Olympic/Commonwealth level coaches in swimming (Antony James and Steve Beckerleg), athletics (Kat Endacott) and shooting  (Gorgs Geikie). We aim to add specialist coaching in Basketball, Squash and Rugby in 2016.

Our swimmers recently started their fortnightly sessions with Olympic/Commonwealth swimmers, Antony James and Steve Beckerleg using our GoPro underwater cameras to help improve performance and technique. Lily Parsons and Joe Tibbetts, who also train with Leander swimming club, were able to put some of this into action at their recent Euro Meet in Luxembourg.

What Our Students Say……..

Kerenza Bryson, Year 12/13, GB Modern Pentathlon under 19s team, “The programme co-ordinates input and feedback from all my different coaches so that  every bit of my daily training  – both in school and outside – is focused on achieving my goals. It’s great to be able to integrate this level of training in the school day with my A levels.”

Elizabeth Stacey, Year 12/13, GB trials for Under 18s rowing team, “The programme has helped me to improve my core stability and get back to full movement as part of my rehabilitation after injury.  With the help or Jon and Kat, I’ve been able to continue training in a safe and constructive way.”

Lily Parsons, Year 10/11, Leander Swimming club, “I live in Cornwall, so joining the school and the programme whilst staying with a host family in the week means I’m able to combine my Leander training with specialist coaching from Olympic swimmer, Antony James, and my GCSEs.”

Jon Rhodes, sport psychologist and Director of Sports Performance adds, “This is a research-led, holistic approach which is designed to give each individual student the very best opportunities possible to fulfil their potential.”
