Top Diving Champions Join School

Plymouth Diving champions, Matt Dixon and Cody Powell-Tuckett  are some of the latest high flying sports students to sign-up for their place at specialist sports school, Plymouth Studio School, this September.

Matt, who is one of Plymouth’s  most promising young divers, recently took part in the Olympic GB team trials for Rio.  He has already qualified for the Junior European Championships  and is looking to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Russia later this year.  Matt, who took Gold against top international divers in Dresden in April and Silver in the British Elite Junior Diving Championships, will join the school in Year 12.

Cody Powell-Tuckett, who won a bronze at her first British Elite Junior Championships last year and has now received her first call up for the England Junior Talent Camp, will join the school in Year 10. She will be representing England in July in Italy.

Both students will be combining their academic studies with the school’s  unique Sports Performance Programme, which includes extra strength and conditioning support, access to world-class testing and monitoring facilities and added flexibility to accommodate existing training and competition schedules for young athletes.

Cody comments, “I train 6 days a week with the High Performance Elite squad at Plymouth Diving, some days I’m training two to three times a day.  Joining the Sports Performance Programme at Plymouth Studio School,  feel I will gain all the support I need to achieve my educational and diving goals. I am very excited to start in September.

Sports Psychologist and Associate Principal for the school, Jon Rhodes, who is currently working with several Rio 2016 athletes comments, “We’re delighted that Matt and Cody are joining us and we’re looking forward to supporting them in fulfilling their full sporting and academic potential.

“ Our Sports Performance Programme provides them with a research led, holistic approach and gives them the flexibility and focused support to integrate existing coaching and additional training within their school timetable, without sacrificing their school work.”

Matt and Cody will be joining other students currently training with GB and national squads in Modern Pentathlon, Taekwondo, Women’s Rugby and Underwater Hockey, as well as Leander swimmers competing at national and European level.   Other  Plymouth Divers already at the school include, Calvin Krimmelbein, who recently took first in the Regional Diving Championships (13 -15 age group) and Harry Mason.

Based on site at the University of St Mark & St John , the school’s new High Performance Sports Centre  and £4.2 million school building will open this Autumn.  The school offers a mix of GCSEs, A levels and BTECs for 14 -19 year olds looking for careers in Sports Performance, Sports Coaching & Development & Sports Management or for those who want to combine their sporting ambitions with other careers.
